Decommissioning of NIB Mall Progresses on Schedule
The decommissioning of the NIB Mall in Scarborough is progressing well and
on schedule. In a release from the Communication Consultant for the NIBTT,
Michael A.T. Stewart confirmed that 100% of the tenants complied with
evacuation notices and Phase 1 is now completed.
The Board and Management of the NIBTT were informed by two independent
engineering companies that the Mall was structurally unsafe and should be
demolished. In the interest of public safety, the NIBTT issued notices to
tenants to vacate the premises. The NIBTT in recognition of its corporate
social responsibility, offered transportation, labour, warehouse storage and
insurance for goods stored at the warehouse for a period of three (3) months
at no cost to the tenants. Many tenants said they were pleased with the
offer by the NIBTT and took advantage of the assistance which resulted in
making the process of moving more efficient.
Stewart said that Phase 2 has already begun. Phase 2 includes the gutting of
the building where salvageable items such as partitions, frames, glass and
doors are removed and the decommissioning of utilities such as telephones,
lights and water. Phase 2, Stewart advises is 60% completed.
The Public is advised that the NIBTT proposes to auction the salvageable
items to the former tenants as a first option and the remaining items to the
general public in late May 2013 and the Public will be advised of these
dates in the coming week.
Meanwhile Expressions of Interest (EOI) has been sent out by NIPDEC inviting
tenders for the demolition of the Mall which forms part of Phase 3.
Demolition works is expected to commence in Mid-June and should take
approximately 10 weeks.
Phase 4 is the reconstruction phase and Terms of Reference (TOR),
Expressions of Interest (EOI) and Requests for Proposals (RFP'S) documents
have been prepared in draft and will be finalised soon. Reconstruction is
expected to take approximately 18 months.
The NIBTT reminds the Public that parking at the Mall is restricted to
AUTHORISED PERSONNEL ONLY as the site is a construction site and motorists
are advised to seek alternative parking during this time.
The Management of the NIBTT wishes to thank the general public for its
cooperation during this temporary inconvenience and promises to return
business activities to the same location in the shortest possible time.
