IT'S TIME TO SUBMIT YOUR LIFE CERTIFICATE
MEDIA RELEASE
LIFE Certificates still needed
The National Insurance Board of Trinidad and Tobago (NIBTT) and the Ministry
of Legal Affairs (MLA) continue to collaborate to fine tune the process of
accessibility and verification of records; looking for a solution which would
permanently address proof of life issues for long term beneficiaries.
On Wednesday, 26th February 2014, NIBTT entered into a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with the MLA. This arrangement with the Registrar
General’s Department was made in an effort to eliminate the need for most long
term NIS beneficiaries to submit Life Certificates twice a year.
Shortly after, the NIB commenced its drive to collect the unique PIN from all
long term beneficiaries. Because a significant number of persons do not have
their electronic birth certificates or have incomplete records, the NIBTT’s
ability to completely rely on these records for the purpose of paying or not
paying a benefit is compromised.
The receipt of data from MLA and in particular, the submission of a death
certificate list which would have included the unique PIN would have
facilitated the removal of the life certificate process, as our beneficiary
would have been presumed to be alive until such time as his/her PIN appeared
on a death certificate.
As June 2015 approaches and life certificates become due, the NIBTT must
however again request that recipients of the following long term benefits
submit Life certificates by June 26th 2015:
- Retirement Pension
- Invalidity
- Disablement
- Survivor’s
- Death benefit
To assist our beneficiaries, life certificate locations and accessibility
points for our customers have been expanded.
Life Certificates can be completed at any of the following locations:
1. All 13 National Insurance Service Centres and our 2 Collection Centres
(a list of locations and operating hours is attached)
2. All national insurance service centres and offices will be opened on
